Yuri Manga Reviews
Yuri: Commonly associated with manga and anime, yuri depicts romantic, physical, spiritual, and/or emotional relationships between girls or women. Also commonly know as “girl love.”
First off, these are reviews. They are subjective. They are opinions. I write them because I want to and every so often I get friends who want recommendations. For any new folks who stumble across these reviews, the goal with any review content is to find a reviewer you align with! If you don’t like what I have to say, cool! Move along and enjoy the beauty of this genre from someone else’s perspective :3
A few things about me. First, I have a low tolerance for fan service and age/consent issues. As an American, I don’t have the cultural tools to deeply understand how common tropes (like adult/children relationships) are written and received by a Japanese audience. They seem to be normalized in Japanese media, which has a very different relationship to these themes than Americans do. Second, I am mixed-race (filipino, white). I began reading manga in the early 2000s (rip Shonen Jump) and watching anime around the same time (rip Toonami). Some anime I enjoy include: Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Attack on Titan, Kaguya-Sama: Love is War, and Cowboy Bebop.
I am a writer and tend to like series with slower pacing and consistent character writing. It really bugs me when stories ramp up for no discernible reason or break tension too early. I also get irritated if a character switches tone or motivation for no apparent reason. To me, yuri is all about tension. Make my heart race, make me cry, make we wistful. Explicit relationships and physical intimacy are not required, so not all the series I adore have those things. I read yuri because I adore living vicariously through stories that highlight the diversity and beauty of what it means to be a women who loves women.
Having said all of that, to me, the most important factor for genres like yuri is taste. I can say anything in theory, but sometimes you like a series and you can’t express exactly why, and that’s a beautiful thing!
I will not identify whether a series is “canonical” or well loved/hated in the community. Put simply, I don’t know which ones are. As a newcomer to this genre, I am relatively unscathed by any preconceived notions. My method for selecting a new series is simply heading to my local bookshop/library and reading through the backside of any yuri manga I find and picking up what looks interesting. I don’t do background research and try to go into a series with an open mind. I am open to recommendations, but prefer to have as little context as possible when going into it.
Okay, without further ado, here are my reviews!

A Tropical Fish Yearns for Snow
Back Flap Summary:
After her father traveled overseas for work, Konatsu Amano moved to Iyo-Nagahama to live with her aunt. On the way to her aunt’s house, she gets dragged into her new high school’s aquarium open house. It is there where she meets Koyuki Honami, a pretty upperclassman. After encountering each other a few more times, the girls quickly become infatuated with one another. In an attempt to get closer to Koyuki, Konatsu joins the aquarium club, which previously had Koyuki as the only member.
Konatsu and Koyuki are similar in many ways. They both feel an acute sense of loneliness, are kind and thoughtful, and yet are also reserved and stubborn. The latter qualities make the girls hesitant to share their feelings, leading to complications in their friendship. To move forward, the girls will have to figure out what they mean to each other and how to navigate their emotions. Will loneliness remain their sole companion, or will Konatsu and Koyuki find the courage to face themselves and each other?

Adachi and Shimamura
Back Flap Summary:
Shimamura’s not really into the social scene at school. So when she cuts class and heads to her usual spot in the gym, the last thing she wants to see is another girl there making herself at home. Somehow, though, the awkward, silent moments they share keep bringing them closer… But when Adachi starts wanting something more, Shimamura finds the line between friends and girlfriends getting thinner and thinner…
Review Book 1:
Every adolescent impulse acted out in full cringe? Check. Slacker meets slacker romance? Check. Blurred line between “I want to be her versus I want to be with her”? Check. To me, this series shines because it begins with such intense emotions. There are no explanations or reflections. It hearkens to a time when you were overwhelmed by nothing but yearning. A time where you would do anything to be with the person of your desire, but continually mess things up as your nerves and desire clash.
Disclaimer: When I wrote above that some series will just hit all of your notes and you can’t explain or justify why? This is it for me. There are many problematic bits to this manga (moreso in the anime) and I don’t care. This series pierces my heart and brings up so many feelings I had when I was an early teen. The first time I experienced this series it broke me (in a good way).
Series Review:
I have read the first volume and watched through the anime. I will be reading through the entire manga series and updating the review just on the manga once done.

After Hours
Back Flap Summary:
Asahina Emi, an ordinary girl dragged along to a club by a friend, has a chance encounter with Kei, a savvy, fashionable, vinyl-collecting lesbian and what unfolds a heart-throbbing, shimmering tale of girl meets girl against the backdrop of Tokyo’s vibrant nightlife scene.
Review Book 1:
Have you ever had a terrible night at a club? Where your friends don’t show up and a disgusting man tries to pick you up? What if a dreamy, confident woman stepped in to save you, took you by the hand and asked you to join her as you run amok in the city? Set in the nightlife of a city, After Hours follows the main character Emi as love interest Kei pushes her further and further out of her comfort zone. With each new experience, introverted Emi builds her aspirations and confidence, growing closer to Kei.
With some pacing and character consistency issues, the stories core fantasy is strong and the romance is light.
Series Review (light spoilers ahead):
To me, Yuri shines when you selfishly indulge in the yearning or love for another. You peer into veil of romance and feel every heartbeat with the character, fluttering or frustrating. Or, yuri has to take a more typical story-line and show why women loving women is different and deeper. After Hours was always the latter, but it didn’t stand out until volume 3.In V1 and V2. The greatest flaw of this series is that when the story peaks, the writing never rises to meet the occasion. It falls flat at best and feels canned at worst. Emi slowly gets more complex and begins to grow. Even the group becomes steadily more fleshed out, and by the end I was wistful that I would have to leave them behind. The romance was never the strength, so these other facets had to the heavy lifting to keep you engaged. Kei is a fun character. But, she wasn’t unique or strong enough to live one-dimensional for so long. And then? Volume 3.
V3 finally delivered character growth. Kei is allowed space to become a full character which simultaneously brings Emi’s journey to a milestone. The group feels like they have their own identity. The stakes are raised and everyone has a lot to lose. I wanted her to risk it all. I wanted to be angry at Kei. I wanted to see the group struggle and overcome. I wanted-
All a tragedy considering this is where the story ends. Ironically, it’s what would make me recommend the series.

Bloom into You
Back Flap Summary:
Yuu has always adored shoujo manga and yearns for the day when someone might give her a love confession that would send her heart aflutter. Yet when a junior high school classmate confesses his feelings to her – she feels nothing. Disappointed and confused , Yuu enters high school, where she sees the confident and beautiful student council member Nanami. When the next person to confess to Yuu is Nanami herself, has her romantic dream finally come true?
Review Book 1:
Whether you are the subject of unwanted love confessions or are impatiently yearning for your first, this story will (hopefully) make you feel seen. There are few subjects as violently rupturing as unrequited love. However, the story of Yuu and Nanami plays with this theme by asking, “Will you just let me love you? Even if you don’t feel the same for me?” Yuu’s struggle to find her first love is matched by Nanami’s struggle to manage the love well within her reach. You will find yourself rooting for what always feels like a long shot.

Citrus
Back Flap Summary:
Yuzu Aihara is a girl who loves fashion and is always worried about her appearance. She likes to go out with her friends, but has never kissed or dated anyone before. But her life turns upside down when her mother remarries and Yuzu is transferred to a very strict all-girls school, where she can’t wear makeup and earrings or even bring a cellphone. Deciding to rebel, she dresses how she likes on her first day, and because of that, she is called out in front of the entire school by the student council president: Mei Aihara, a girl who is the complete opposite of Yuzu.
To make her situation worse, when Yuzu gets home, she finds out that she has a new sister, and it turns out to be none other than Mei herself. Annoyed with the circumstances, the student council president kisses her, in an effort to prove a point. However, everything changes when Yuzu seems to like it and can’t stop thinking about it.
Review Book 1:
How does it feel to fall for someone who treats you like trash? Who, when push comes to shove, you will let them do both? When in between cutting remarks, they give you what you didn’t realize you wanted.
If this series has anything, it has the audacity. Citrus is a drama. None of the story threads give you a break. Whether it is family life, school, friends, or a budding (but terrifying) romantic relationship, something is going wrong and the stakes are high. So many Yuri stories play with long, drawn out tension. Not Citrus. No, this is a “toxic throw me around and make me regret my actions” kind of manga. There is no doubt that this story isn’t about a healthy relationship. But, they make it damn compelling.

Hana & Hina After School
Back Flap Summary:
Hana and Hina are two high school girls working at the same character goods shop, but they are completely different from one another. Hana is petite, uncertain and shy, while Hina is tall, confident, and trendy. Yet they share a secret: their school has a strict policy against taking part-time jobs. They also discover that both of them share an irresistible attraction to things that are cute, be it the uniforms at their all-girls’ school or… each other! Just how long will Hana and Hina be able to keep their after school jobs, and their feelings for each other, a secret?
Review Book 1:
I really, really wanted this series to come through. For it to even out the wrinkles and deliver on a solid story. Unfortunately, I personally had a few qualms with the execution of the story.
In general, I found the dialogue passable, but the characters (specifically Hina) felt unbelievable. Yes, teens have mood swings and under the spotlight of romance, even more still. However, the pacing and character inconsistency just didn’t feel aligned, which made the story difficult to get into. I personally don’t love this art style. It is clear this author has grown a lot in the past few years (My Little Kitten)! The fidelity isn’t on par with modern stories (perhaps hand-drawn versus digitally-augmented) and the characters themselves are a bit too infantalized for my preference. I do think there is something valuable about stories that are still sensitive to the places and times where love between women is still hidden and instills a sense of powerlessness.
Series Review (spoilers ahead):
Can a series be worth reading for the last twenty pages? Apparently yes! The stumbling, fumbling of character and story at least brought a high level of tension built up page-after-page for three volumes! It is clear this author feels at home in intimacy. When the characters finally confess and a relationship begins. That is where they shine. Those final pages sent a torrent of emotions through my body and it was such a needed narrative relief. While the story peaked, what followed felt pleasant and genuinely enjoyable! The posing on the cover of Milteen magazine felt incredible and something I did not predict! I do feel that Hinako’s worries about the relationship not lasting came in too late and was resolved too quickly. It’s a great tension, but did not get the attention it deserved. This is a general theme with Maiko, for instance.
Overall, given how short this series is, I am very happy I pushed through the early volumes!

My Cute Little Kitten
Back Flap Summary:
Rena has had a crush on her roommate Yuna since college, but Yuna has never noticed. One night, Yuna brings home a tiny kitten, even though their apartment doesn’t allow pets! Rena decides it would be better to let Yuna find her own place. But when Yuna says she wants to stay with Rena forever, Rena’s feelings are forced to the surface. Can Rena make Yuna understand what being together forever really means?
Review Book 1:
How long could you remain silent? Content? How long you would you allow yourself to be within arms reach, but to never actually touch the subject of your desire? Apparently just long enough for a kitten to arrive and break your lease policy!
This series starts of rough. The initial motivations and tension feel flat. The writing begins bland and speech bubbles confusing. But! But! About halfway through, the motivations change. Instead of speedrunning a confession, its the new relationship nerves, the second-guessing and fumbling of trying too hard, and the thought in the back of your head “if I give everything to her, will she still want me if I have nothing else?” Those are authentic questions. They let the characters, especially Yuna, really shine. This in tandem with the creative and playful ways the cat messes up these tensions really makes the series. Also, the nude scenes are very cute :3
P.S. Most of these issues would be taken care of with a prequel where we get vingettes of Rena and Yuna in college, so the building tension between the two and Rena’s ultimatum with the kitten feel like higher stakes!

Superwomen in Love! Honey Trap & Rapid Rabbit
Back Flap Summary:
The Antinoids are a mysterious race of monsters who have secretly come to Earth in order to conquer it. While most of the population remains unaware, the heroine Rapid Rabbit fights against these evil fiends.
In a particularly tough battle, Honey Trap—one of the Antinoid’s Executive Officers—sees Rapid Rabbit without her mask and learns her true identity. But just as she obtains the upper hand, Honey Trap flees with a flushed face, confusing Rapid Rabbit. As it turns out, Rapid Rabbit is Honey Trap’s ideal type.
Returning to her organization with nothing but a new crush, Honey Trap is exiled from the Antinoids and left with nowhere to go. Roaming the lone streets, she is eventually rescued by none other than Rapid Rabbit after collapsing near her apartment. Having no one else to turn to, Honey Trap decides to team up with Rapid Rabbit and get revenge on the Antinoids.
Review Book 1 (WIP):
I find the other Executives (the super villains in this world) much more interesting and filled with character than either of the main protagonists. Their homo eroticism and relationship dynamic provides much more feeling than the often blunt and bland dialogue between Rapid Rabbit and Honey Trap. I find the dynamic between the leader of the Antinoids and Executives hilarious and refreshing. The ways in which the story weaves in and out of delightfully cringe relationship dynamics and major, superhero fight scenes almost works. It certainly works well enough for someone who is primarily looking for the romance angle.
My biggest issue is with the writing. Each time a major moment occurs and there is a whiff of tension, it all falls flat. There is no follow through, no second guessing, no plot twist that could even be conceivable. It all goes to waste.

Just as Ichika and her family begin to settle down after a funeral, a mysterious young lady appears in their home searching for something. Who is this person? And is she looking for a memento or is she hunting down something more vascular?
Review Book 1:
Vampire lovers are time worn trope. But one I rarely tire of! Who is immune to the dual tensions of blood lust and… lust lust? Unlike other yuri stories, there seems to be a world on the periphery of this story. The edges of which bleed into the story causing delightful rifts and shifts. I am cheating a bit, but the relationship dynamic takes a surprising (and refreshing) shift into book 2. This turn sold me on the series and now I’m hooked :3
The initial romance (and romantic queues) are a bit headstrong which leaves little tension, but how the relationship blossoms really makes up for it later on.

Whisper Me A Love Song
Back Flap Summary:
Yori Asanagi is a mature girl in many ways but is still pure when it comes to romance. That sentiment is proven when an underclassman, Himari Kino, suddenly confesses love to her after her band performance at the freshman opening ceremony.
Confused and surprised, Yori asks her friends for consultation, but they tease her by saying that she is experiencing love. Yori soon makes up her mind and tries to return Himari’s feelings, but in a twist of events, she realizes that what Himari loved was not her, but her music!
Review Book 1:
“Ah? A misunderstanding? No! Wait, maybe? No… But I will fight!”
Could you bare to show your face when you confess your unrequited love? Or would you fight for your feelings? The feeling of never wanting to be out of sight of your love interest. So enveloped in their every movement and word. So willing to put it all on the line at a moment’s notice because even a day is too long to be without them. *Swoon*
Everything just works. The duality of the shy resolve of Yori mixed with the indecision and energy of Himari. The cast of other characters are brought in immediately and are fun and vibrant, while also pushing Yori around in fun ways. Himari is so bright, cheery, and pushy, which is a nice reversal from other romance manga. Her friend Miki provides nice contrast and a sounding board for Himari’s bright personality. The art isn’t innovative, but is very strong. Fun play with chibi moments, expression is clear, and very easy to follow everything. I adore this series so far!
